Necessity of the modern Sports Medicine support in our country to progress in sports

“Sports Medicine“which is considered to be an essential part of sports, very unfortunately has not been given much importance in our country.  As injury is a very common factor in sports hence having the best possible support from the sports medicine department is quite a necessity for success. All the developing countries who are doing extremely well in sports, have taken this part very seriously as the tool of their success.

India is a country where almost 60% kids are interested in joining sports and consider it to be their career. Especially the underdeveloped areas of the country where poverty is very much visible and children are not taken care in a proper manner. It has been followed that the class sportsperson of the nation are mainly coming from that part of the society and dominating nearly all the sectors of sports.

Given proper guidance and facilities to those young sportspersons India can develop in much well-organised way at the international sports events. It has been observed that on an average 25% young talented Indian sportsman could not continue their sports career due to injury or wrong treatment. The lack of modern technology and facilities in the pre and post operation rehab system is one of the crucial stages where a lot of players are forced to quit their sports career. As the recovery process does not happen in an accurate way which could help them continue their sports activity like earlier.

Having the opportunity to be associated with sports directly, I often feel the need of having a well equipped Sports Medicine facility in our country. The recent incidents where two youth and a senior player of our club were wrongly treated by the Dr. Vikash Kappor and in all the cases it was the knee surgery which brought their football career at verge of a great uncertainty. It has been more than three years that those players are struggling for their recovery from knee injuries. But nothing positive outcome can be seen so far and one of them already decided to give up his football career and the other two had gone through another phase of surgery under the famous “Sports Medicine doctor of the country Dr. Kanchan Bhattacharya” and they are expected to come back to filed very soon. But the immense loose of three years can’t be compensated which they have lost due to the wrong surgery of Dr. Vikash Kapoor. As staying out of the main stream of football for a long period of time will definitely be something extremely difficult to overcome and play with a good level of confidence again.

After the post surgery whenever they visited to Dr. Kapoor, he kept on saying the same thing to them that they need to gain power in order to improve their condition. They just followed his instruction and put all the efforts on gaining more power. In this entire process of rehab the Brazilian Physio Mr. Garcia, who used to work in our club earlier helped them a lot.  Garcia is truly a kind-hearted person who always helps the injured players with their rehab process and doesn’t charge at all for the same. Seeing their condition Garcia was in a great worry and finally suggested them to consult Dr. Kanchan Bhattacharya.

It was really an awful matter which may now cause the destruction of three footballer’s career due to the negligence of a doctor. However as there is a say “Where there is will there is way”. So we are quite optimistic about the quick recovery of the young footballers and expect that such sorrowful incident shouldn’t repeat by any doctor again.

We must also learn a valuable lesson from the above cited incident and realize the necessity of having an updated medical system to prevent injuries and quick recovery through a scientific rehab process.
