The condition of Kolkata Medical College hospital

It has been quite a long time that I visit the Kolkata Medical college hospital for my treatment. I have also gone to other Govt. Hospitals in Bangalore and Hyderabad in several times for the same purpose. In all the places I have found certain things common and one of those is the area where the hospitals are situated. Nevertheless my visits to Kolkata hospital are more often than any other places as I belong to the city.

It is true that over a period of time there has been a lot of changes took place in the Kolkata Medical College hospital. Especially, ever since our respected Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took charge, she has always emphasised on the fact of modernizing all the hospitals and tried her best to provide decent services to the citizens of the state as well the country. Although she is not yet fully successful to achieve her objective but there is no lack of endeavour from her end to progress the health sector of West Bengal government.

Unlike earlier, now a days we can get our treatment done at the government hospitals quite comprehensively, even thou  there are still many hospitals , mainly in rural areas are not that developed, as far as providing quality treatment is concerned. Many people are still dying due to lack of basic treatment and proper nursing care at the government hospitals and such things are pretty much regular in places like Murshidabad, Birbhum and many other districts of West Bengal.

Despite of the fact that all the government hospitals of our state receive almost the same amount of financial support, but the development is quite sloth in  the hospitals in rural area’s compared to the cities. The West Bengal government is trying their best to bring a positive change and develop the work culture in all the govt. Sectors but there are some people who are not that co-operative to let it happen. Thus often things and govt. Projects remain unsuccessful in our state. In order to get maximum benefit from the government projects we all need to be pretty up to date, so that we can’t be fooled or deprived of our basic rights so easily.

As I have mentioned above that a lot of positive changes took place in Kolkata Medical College hospital in last few years but things are not being implemented or used in the best possible manner. It is true that many new buildings have been built up and other services have also been made available to people these days. But we are yet to get the best support and services from govt. hospitals. From my personal experiences I have observed that although the government has built many new buildings and renovated some of the old buildings in Medical college, but due to lack of maintenance many of those buildings are still lying in unused condition. The washrooms in the hospital are not at all maintained regularly, in fact not even once in a month. As in my last one year’s visit to the hospital I have always found the washrooms in the same  unclean and dirty condition,  even thou there are people deployed by the private agencies to take care of the hygienic part of the hospital.

So far I have only pointed out the outer disputes which I had felt the most necessary elements to improve the condition of the hospital. And now I would demonstrate some of my awful experiences with the staff and doctors of the hospital which I will never want any other patient to experience . During my treatment in 2012-13 I really had a poor experience when one of the doctors of the medical college misbehaved with me and also denied to listen to my problems which were very much related to my health issue and later on turned out to be more serious. As per his demand then “I was totally cured and it was my over possessiveness which made me obsessive about my problem”.

But soon after his  prediction in 2012-13 on my disease turned wrong as I was diagnosed in Bangalore with the same problem with my leg, which I have been suffering from last two years. In Bangalore when I visited the hospital just two months after from finishing my treatment in Kolkata, where the doctor confirmed that I was totally healed and don’t need to take any medication, I was again advised to continue the medicine for my leg in Bangalore. After consulting the doctors in Bangalore when I came back to Kolkata and informed the doctor about what I was advised in Bangalore and also complained about the fact that due to his negligence I stayed untreated for two months there was no sign of any sympathy in his or any of the doctors  behaviour of the respective department of Medical College for making such wrong judgment.

Very recently I have endured another bitter experience and it was in another department of Medical College where I have been treated for last two years. General in that department I visit a particular doctor  who is well aware about my problems, but very unluckily she wasn’t there on that day and therefore I had to consult the other doctor in that section. I went for my usual monthly check up that day and the doctor who was treating me seemed to be less concerned to listen to my problems and rather busy in listing to the problems of the other patient who was treated by the H.D of the department. Thus I waited patiently until she became free, so that I could tell her about my problems but she was not at all ready to listen to me thoroughly, which naturally made me feel quite insecure and she was in hurry to make the prescription based on her assumption, which in past for my case reveled quite wrong in Medical College in 2012-13. But I had to stay there very helplessly to get the prescription and eventually forced to leave the room without sharing much of my problems with her.

Like me plenty of patients in the government hospitals forced to leave without proper treatment and in many cases with wrong assumption or treatments which later on create a massive problem for them. At least in my case I have minimum education and also the situation where I can continue my treatment in private or some other health centres. But people from rural areas are quite unaware of the consequences of their disease and on top of that their other personal problems causes a huge barrier for them to continue their treatment if they are not cared properly in the government hospitals. Given the fact I would expect that very soon our government would definitely take some steps to eradicate such problems. However, only government’s endeavour in this case won’t make it a successful project until we too co-operate and maintain all the rules set out by the government properly.
