Examinations amid the pandemic

Amid the pandemic the decision that the Indian government, in consultation with the education department, has taken about conducting examinations like NEET, JEE etc, has certainly aroused anger among the students. According to the students, for so long, when the country has followed strict lock-down to curve the disease Covid-19, what really then prompted the government to take the decision, while the percentage of affected people is rising each day? While in our country, due to lack of infrastructural facilities, we are lagging so behind to cop-up with the vicious disease, how could the government ensure that all the necessary measurement shall be in place during the days of examinations?

Most importantly, if things really do not work out according to the plan of government and somehow a large number of students get affected by the disease then it can eventually lead the country to a state of complete indiscipline. Moreover, it is yet to see if taking such a risk by putting so many lives of young students on steak at all worth taking the risk. Now, being motivated by the announcement of government to hold examinations amid such crisis, many under government and private education sectors are also planning to schedule their examinations soon.

Ignou, is one such under government organization, which has very recently published about conducting their final examinations in September. Ignou, being an open university in India, holds immense reputation and a large number of students enroll for different courses in the university. Therefore, holding the final examination in such a short notice and amid the pandemic means a huge gathering all across the nation revolving the examinations. It perhaps does not really make sense to hold the examination in such quick notice and take such a big risk. One of the major concerns that students are facing is that ‘how would they commute to the examination halls when the entire country would be on partial lock-down and the railway has been on complete shut down for months. It is indeed a matter of concern for those, who are going to appear for all India based examination, as students from different states are expected to come to other states to attend the examination. And while there is complete irregularity in the travelling modes and hotels are following the protocol of governments for months, it is quite anticipated that students will surely be harassed, those, who would come from far to attend the examinations.

As, there is a glimpse of hope that soon the vaccine would be launched, our government must have reconsidered that factor and could have decided to schedule the examinations later in December 2020 or beginning of 2021. Since, examinations matters a lot in students’ life, no student would be ready to skip it even though it demands them to put their life on steak. They would perhaps be ready to take any risk without a second thought. But our government and all the educational unit must have shown little bit of wisdom in this matter while taking the decision of conducting the examinations amid such difficult time. However, when the decision has been taken by the higher authority, it has to be abided by all and thus, it is only expected that things would go smoothly and the examinations would be completed in peace.

  1. I felt like it was me writing that but somehow it ended up being executed by you. Such incisive points and chastisement of the government is very effective. And your concerns are very palpable. It indeed is a matter of great concern as to how all these students would be accommodated staying within the parameters of lockdown and keeping at least 6 ft distance. Mind you, it also comes in the background of showing the states of union power. If the states defy the rules, the penalties would have to be borne by the students. You've pretty briefly put in a solution which is they could wait at least untill the vaccines are available. So that way students could move around with less fear of contracting the virus and therefore more chances of infections could be averted because those students also will get back home being carriers of the virus and putting others at equal risk. Additionally, you also mention the hazards of commuting when one living in a distant area has to report to the campus to take exams, I'm sure it'll create a lot of nuisance in one's life, albeit concessions being given such as if one misses the exam this time , they can appear in December without paying again but still why this harassment? The ground reality will be a nightmare as can be predetermined. lastly, this read not like an ordinary , hokey pokey essay but like an open book to our queries and tensions.
