Although, we the Bengalis have progressed in all the sphere of life remarkably and earned significance reputation all across the globe as a community but one of the fundamental yet most important aspects of human characters i.e. ‘humanity’ is apparently missing in us in notable amount. Our upbringing, social stratification and many other factors that have immense influence on us and on our surroundings seem to be persuading us to consider everything in life from the perspective of one’s social and financial capability than anything else.
Unlike past days when we were known for our tradition and friendly nature, as far as welcoming a visitor at our home was concerned, yet somehow things are changing in the contemporary time. The perpetual work pressure of ours that covers up most of our time barely gives us the opportunity to think about such useful factors of life.
More or less those who stay in urban areas are well known to the online services that are served at our doorstep these days. In recent days, due to the remarkable progress in the field of technology our dependency on online services has taken a significant turn. With the introduction of companies like Flipkart, Amazon etc. the concept is gaining momentum in present days.
With the concept gaining popularity in the urban life style, a large number of families also rely on online services for everything from their household shopping to buying electronic goods. On top of that the prevailing crisis due to pandemic made it more viable for us to welcome the concept more broadly. Although we have welcomed the concept with a positive note and eventually it is grabbing more attention throughout the nation, how well do we really behave with the people who visit our home to deliver the product or service that we order online or how do we really behave with people of lower strata? for an instance a waiter in a restaurant.
Without any prejudice in mind, I must admit to the fact that even though a large number of people of our society lack basic manners while dealing with men of struggling classes, there are also many, who still posses’ humanity in them while dealing with the people of lower strata. The latter class of people values everyone irrespective of the profession they are into. On the other hand, there are also instances when delivery boys are being humiliated or insulted for no reason by the consumers. A class of people of our society seems to posses some kind of apathy in their mind or rather, they prefer to look down to the struggling classes in such a manner that it creates a kind of invisible classification in society.
As a community we must not forget that humanity is our biggest power and if we ignore that we will gradually parish as per the rule of time. It is not expected that we would ask a delivery boy to come inside our house and offer him tea or coffee or offer a waiter at a restaurant to sit on our own seat. But it can at least be expected that our kindness and compassion both would reflect in our behavior while dealing with them. There are few common behavioral aspects of ours, changing of which may change things in favor of us. One of them is while talking to anyone; we should bear a smile on face or talk to the person in a soothing tone that would certainly create better impression on them about us. We should realize the fact that we do not really need to pay anything to bring a smile on our face or be compassionate while dealing with whosoever, it actually exhibit our own value and dignity.
Above all we also have to understand the fact that we being a part of the society have to act more like a human being than like a machine. If we cannot respect our own beings then we should not actually expect from others to respect us as well. It is process which is more like a mirror that ‘it reflects the same image what it gets’
