I found a lot of resemblance
between the letter that Sam Jhonson, wrote to Chesterfield, with our modern social
condition. Sam Jhonson, wrote this letter on the eve of his dictionary
publication on 7th February 1775 in reply to chesterfield’s appreciation.
Jhonson very aptly and lucidly expressed his agony for the unkindness of
Chesterfield through the use of brilliant language. The use of different figure
of speeches has certainly made this letter so popular in English literature
even after so many years.
Chesterfield’s attempt to
grab the public attention by praising Johnson, when he was so successful in
life and eventually in no need of encouragement from Chesterfield; apparently depict
our modern social condition. Johnson mentioned in the end part of his letter
that the help or appreciation that Chesterfield was extending to him now, ‘had
it been early, had been kind; but it has been delayed till he is successful in
life’. Several talented people in our society similarly go unnoticed until the
achieve success in life.
Our social condition at
present has the same condition as Jhonson narrated in his letter. In the modern
era a sports personnel or a student is never brought under the limelight until
the achieve success in life and when he/she is no more in the need of others
help. Our medias make their accomplishment a well written marketing story but
never make the least endeavor to bring their struggle to people when those strugglers
were in real need of help .
Just like Jhonson, who got
repulsed from Chesterfield’s home after waiting several hours, there perhaps be
several strugglers in our society, who get rejected by the politicians for simplest
of favor. But very surprisingly those politicians do not hesitate to boast
themselves with the credit on television when that very person, whom they have
once rejected, become successful and in no more need of appreciation or reorganization
from the politicians.
